How the Numbers Are Calculated

The calculator converts your serving to grams, applies the per-100 g ratio, and then adds the selected cooking fat.

Three derived values deserve explanation:

  • Calories from fat use the standard Atwater factor of 9 kcal per gram of fat.
  • Percent daily value uses 78 g of total fat per day, the reference amount for a 2,000-calorie diet set by the FDA.
  • Omega-3 EPA + DHA is the sum of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the two long-chain omega-3s most strongly linked to heart health; the tool does not include plant-based ALA.

Fat values for raw salmon concentrate slightly when cooked because moisture is lost, but the fat totals in this tool stay close to cooked values for pan-seared or baked fillets. If you eat salmon raw in sushi or poke bowls, the raw values apply directly.

Salmon is a natural product, so the numbers vary from one fillet to the next. Wild-caught fish reflect the season, ocean conditions, and the individual fish's migration; farmed fish depend on the feed formulation, which producers adjust over time. Smoked salmon can also vary with the curing method and whether it is made from farmed or wild fish.

For macro tracking, weighing raw fillets is the most reliable approach because defrosting, trimming, and cooking all change water content. A frozen fillet can weigh more than the same fillet once thawed and patted dry.

Why does farmed salmon have more fat than wild salmon? Farmed salmon receive a controlled, energy-dense diet and move less than wild fish, so their flesh stores more total fat.
