The estimate is based on metabolic equivalents, or MET values. One MET is the energy you burn while sitting quietly at rest. When an activity has a MET value of 4.5, it means your body uses about 4.5 times more energy than it does at rest. The widely used metabolic formula is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200

Total calories = calories per minute × total minutes of play

The 3.5 in the formula represents approximate milliliters of oxygen used per kilogram of body weight per minute, and the 200 converts that oxygen consumption into kilocalories.
