How Sugars in Wheat Are Calculated

Every food entry in this calculator stores a reference value for sugar, total carbohydrate, and fiber per 100 grams of the food as eaten. These values are drawn from USDA FoodData Central standard reference data and reflect typical commercial formulations and cooking methods.

Core formula: Sugar (g) = serving weight (g) × sugar value per 100 g ÷ 100

The same formula is applied to total carbs and fiber. Net carbs are then calculated by subtracting fiber from total carbs, because fiber is not digested as sugar the way other carbohydrates are. The daily value percentage is based on 50 grams of total sugar as a typical reference target.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

Brand and recipe variation. Commercially prepared breads, tortillas, and crackers often add sugar, honey, molasses, or high-fructose corn syrup. A rustic 100% whole wheat loaf can have close to 0 g of added sugar, while a soft sandwich loaf may contain 6–8 g per 100 g. Is wheat high in sugar?

What is net carbs, and why subtract fiber?
