How the Calculation Works
Every activity can be described by a metabolic equivalent, or MET. One MET is the energy your body uses at rest. Rugby training and matches demand several times that resting rate. This tool uses the standard formula for estimating calories from MET: calories per minute = weight in kilograms × MET × 3.5 ÷ 200. Multiply by the minutes you played to get total calories burned.
To turn those calories into walking steps, the calculator assumes a comfortable 3 mph walking pace. Walking at 3 mph uses about 3.5 MET, which means roughly 1.225 calories per kilogram of body weight per mile walked. Divide that by your chosen steps per mile to find the energy cost of one walking step. The total rugby calories are then divided by that per-step value to give the walking step equivalent.

A 75 kg player does 60 minutes of moderate touch rugby, selected at 8 MET, and uses an average stride of 2,200 steps per mile.
Calories burned = 75 × 8 × 3.5 × 60 ÷ 200 = 630 kcal. Calories per walking step = 1.225 × 75 ÷ 2,200 = 0.0418 kcal. Equivalent steps = 630 ÷ 0.0418 ≈ 15,080 steps. That equals about 6.9 miles of walking, or roughly 2 hours 17 minutes at 3 mph.
