Formula Explained

This calculator uses two well-known nutrition steps:

  • Resting Energy Requirement (RER): RER = 70 × body weight (kg)0.75. This estimates the calories needed at rest.
  • Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER): MER = RER × a life-stage factor. Adult dogs typically use 1.4, active dogs 2.0, puppies 2.0, and lactating females 2.5.

Protein is then calculated by applying a life-stage protein density expressed in grams per 100 kcal of food. For example, adult maintenance diets often provide 4.5–6.0 g protein per 100 kcal. Multiplying MER by this density gives the daily protein range in grams. Worked Examples

Example 1: A 15 kg adult dog at maintenance.
RER = 70 × 150.75 ≈ 531 kcal. MER = 531 × 1.4 ≈ 743 kcal.
Protein range = 743 × (4.5 to 6.0)/100 = 33–45 g/day.

Example 2: A 10 kg puppy.
RER ≈ 394 kcal. MER = 394 × 2.0 ≈ 787 kcal.

Food Label Protein Check

Dog food labels list protein as a percentage “as fed.” To estimate how many grams of protein your dog eats daily, multiply the daily food amount by the protein percentage. For example, 250 g of food with 25% protein provides 62.5 g protein. The calculator compares this number to the recommended range and tells you whether the food appears low, high, or within range. Moisture content and food form (dry vs. canned) affect percentages, so treat this as an estimate rather than an exact measurement.
